Professional Training Industrial Mechanic at Fraunhofer IOF

Be part of the development of technologies for industry, medicine, and science. Working on complex machines and precision devices requires a great deal of precision and enthusiasm for technology as well as maximum concentration. If you enjoy working with technology, this job is just right for you.

A defective device has always caused excitement in you because you had the opportunity to fix it?

If this proves true for you and if you enjoy programming your own circuits, the professional training for Industrial Mechanics with a focus on precision engineering is exactly the right one for you.

Tasks: What does an Industrial Mechanic do?

During your training as an industrial mechanic at the Fraunhofer IOF and the Jenaer Bildungszentrum (JBZ), you will receive in-depth basic training with a specialization in precision engineering until you complete the final examination part 1 (approx. 1.5 years). Right from the start, you will work on modern machines such as CNC lathes and milling machines. Of course, you will always have a dedicated contact person at your side. You will be introduced to your tasks and activities step by step and then become increasingly independent in your work.

Processing a lens group with the CNC milling machine. The operation of the CNC machine is an important area of application to be learnt.

You are highly interested in and enthusiastic for machines and coding? You like to puzzle over home devices, bicycles, or motorcycles? You are curious about the technological progress and want to participate in assembling novel devices for Optics and the various other applications of light? These are some good conditions for your professional training.

Overview:

  • Graduation from middle school, technical secondary school, or high school
  • Interest for math, physics, technology, and IT
  • Manual skills, logical thinking, and high precision
  • Very good knowledge of German (min. B2) has to be proven at the start of the training

Structure and sequence of the professional training

During the 3.5 years of your professional training, two training fields are rotated. Under certain conditions (good performance in the theoretical and practical part of the training), the duration of the professional training can be reduced to 3 years.

The dual training for Industrial Mechanics consists of two basic parts:

  • Excellent practical experience through the training at our institute and the Jenaer Bildungszentrum (Jena educational center)
  • Theoretical training in block modules at the vocational school

The longstanding collaboration between the Fraunhofer IOF and the Jenaer Bildungszentrum guarantees an excellent professional basic training for you.

Potential earnings

You will receive a monthly training allowance and social benefits in accordance with the collective agreement for trainees in the public sector (TVAöD).

Apart from that, you will receive a fixed grant for learning material. If your relatives live far away, we will also reimburse you once a month for trips home to the place of residence of your parents, legal guardians or spouse or civil partner (only applies to registered civil partnerships). The travel costs will also be reimbursed if the vocational school and the training center (institute) are located in different municipalities (for more details, see §§10, 11 in the collective agreement for public service trainees).
